Atlas Roofing Corp., a longtime member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), supports the USGBC’s rating system, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED); the most recognized and widely-used green building system in the world.
Architects and building owners increasingly specify Atlas polyiso products to create high performance buildings that qualify for LEED certification. With high thermal efficiency, zero ozone depletion, and near zero global warming potential, Atlas polyiso roofing products offer attributes which allow building owners, architects and specifiers to gain credits under at least two of LEED’s rating categories, including Energy and Atmosphere, and Materials and Resources.
Atlas produces several products that can earn credits under the following LEED rating categories:
-
Energy and Atmosphere
- Minimum Energy Performance: Prerequisite 2 ? - Atlas ACFoam® roof insulation enables compliance with ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and local energy codes.
- Optimize Energy Performance: Credit 1 ? - Atlas ACFoam® provides the highest thermal resistance per inch of material and contributes to achieving LEED levels of optimized energy performance.
-
Materials and Resources
- Construction Waste Management: Credit 2 ? - If the total percentage of reused materials in a project does not meet the minimum levels stated in Materials and Resources, Credit 1, Building Reuse, these reuse activities may be applied to this credit.
- Materials Reuse: Credit 3 ? - Atlas ACFoam® can be and often is reused in order to reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce waste.
- Recycled Content: Credit 4 ? - Atlas ACFoam®-II can be used toward one of the levels of recycled materials credit.
- Local/Regional Materials: Credit 5 ? - Atlas has eight polyiso insulation plants and sources of raw materials across North America. Use of ACFoam® insulation may contribute towards gaining this credit, depending on the project location and the version of LEED being used as the basis of design.
- Rapidly Renewable Materials: Credit 6 ? - Depending on product composition and thickness, AtlasACFoam® can be used toward rapidly renewable materials credits.
- Certified Wood: Credit 7 ? - Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood when used in products where polyiso is bonded to the wood can contribute to gaining this credit.
More than 1,200 USGBC member companies, including Atlas Roofing, cast ballots in the LEED v4 ratification process. On July 2, USGBC members approved the newest version of the certification program, called LEED v4. It will be officially launched during the International Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Philadelphia to be held November 18 to 23, 2013. To gradually ease the design and construction market into these new changes, the USGBC has offered a two-year grace period after the launch. During that time, project teams can choose to build under LEED 2009 or LEED v4.
