During Sherman Heathcock’s first tour in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina sent several large trees crashing through his family’s Hattiesburg, Mississippi property and onto their home. While beginning to tackle the long list of repairs, Sherman’s wife Gina fell victim to a re-roofing scam. The rotting ceilings and damaged foundation were crumbling beneath them and with Sherman in Iraq, his wife and 3 children were worried about losing the battle in their own home. Sherman, a devoted husband and father, had re-enlisted in the Army National Guard following 9/11. During that time, he had served two tours of duty in Iraq where he led squads in combat missions. When he was fortunate to spend time at home, Sherman worked several jobs, leaving little time to repair the devastating damage to their home left by Hurricane Katrina. Now, the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team and hundreds of local volunteers rebuild the house of this hometown hero.
